The Citadel Park of Sibiu is on the south-eastern side of the old medieval citadel, along the fortification wall. A walk through the park can be the ideal occasion to admire the most well preserved fortifications of the city, considering the fact that they were renovated repeatedly; three of the towers built in the 15th century are still in a very good condition: the Potters’ Tower, the Carpenters’ Tower and the Archbishops’ Tower (later called the Blaize Men Tower).
The Citadel Park was known as the “Promenade of the Disabled” because it was preferred by the veterans, injured in the many battles carried out by the Habsburg Empire. The park was constructed in 1791 in the trenches and lakes found in close proximity to the southern wall of the Sibiu Citadel. The works are attributed to Johann von Vecsey, colonel and commander of the “Barron Spleny no. 31” regiment, in honour of which a memorial plaque was placed in the park in 1829.
The statue of emperor Francisc I was made around the same period and is the oldest statue in Sibiu; the statue was taken apart during the communist regime, but was installed in the park in 2007, when the historical town was completely restored.
A highlight of the park is the Celebrity Walk, project inspired by the Hollywood Walk of Fame, showcasing the names of all the cultural and artistic names of Sibiu along the pavement.
