Statue of Prometheus

History of the statue
In Greek history, Prometheus is represented as the titan that created humans out of clay. He is credited for having stolen fire from the gods in order to gift to the people. Prometheus is the first character in history to be described as philanthropic.
Some legends go on to say that for his actions, Prometheus was tied to a rock and the gods sent him vultures to feed on the titan’s liver.
The statue of Prometheus, Electricity Monument or Iron man is located in the area of the Vidraru dam, on a concrete platform set on Pleașa Mountain. It is a bronze statue having 10 meters in height, portraying Prometheus the titan, holding a lightning bolt in his hand - electricity.
The monument was finalized and placed on the mountain in 1971, but the Constantin Popovici, the artist that created the sculpture has been working on Prometheus sculptures made out of plaster since 1964 (he presented this sculpture during his dissertation).
As of 2016, the County Council of Argeș awards the “Iron Man” honour as a recognition of professional and moral values to those contributing to promote and develop the county of Argeș.
