The Transfăgărășan Road is currently fully open and can be crossed safely.
Is it possible to drive on the Transfagarașan Highway?
YES:
You can also drive in the alpine area, between Bâlea Cascada (Sibiu county) and Piscul Negru (Argeș county) between 07:00 and 21:00.
In the event of adverse weather conditions, the road will be temporarily closed until the weather permits the reopening of the road under safe conditions.
Are there risks of accidents on the Transfagarașan Highway in winter?
NO: The open road sections are rigorously maintained even in winter, being cleared of snow several times a day.
The only dangerous section is from Conacul Ursului to Capra Cabin, where avalanches can occur. This section is physically open (no barrier) but technically closed (with indicator).

When can I visit the Transfagarașan Highway?
ANYTIME: All tourist attractions available in summer are also accessible in winter. Exceptions are the attractions in the alpine area: Capra Waterfall - which can only be reached on foot and Bâlea Lake - which can be reached by cable car.
We recommend you to choose the winter period to relax on Transfăgărășan and visit the tourist attractions because it is less crowded and cheaper than the summer period.
In summer, we suggest you enjoy the road, navigating in peace the road full of hairpins and landscapes. Also, in the summer it is recommended to approach the hiking trails in the Făgăraș Mountains, but it is not a rule, they are accessible all year round for those who are prepared.

Do I need winter tires to cross the Transfagarașan Highway?
IT DEPENDS: In winter, even if you’re not venturing into the alpine area, it’s recommended to have winter tires, especially if you’re staying until dusk, when the road often freezes.
In the summer, even if there is still snow on the mountain, the road is impeccably maintained by road workers and the summer tires will cope brilliantly.

Do I risk a fine if I ignore the “Road Closed” sign at Conacul Ursului?
YES: during winter, the alpine area is closed and this is announced from Bascov (Pitesti). Those who ignore this warning risk a fine and any damage sustained in the closed sections of the road is not covered by insurance policies.

On the North side (from Sibiu), the road is physically blocked using concrete curbs and access is impossible.
